“By physicians, for physicians” — a universal healthcare plugin Feat. Epic Systems

Overview

When did designing for tomorrow mean stop improving the technology we have today?

Project

I created a new add-on feature that will allow physicians see patient records and test results in their healthcare system, no matter where they were treated on, using Epic Systems to showcase.

Focusing on the gap between patient records kept in various systems, by completing the snapshot of a patients previous care impacts a current treatment plan for the better.

Role + Responsibility

I was the sole designer and researcher on this project.

Project Limits

Epic was chosen as it was the system that I am the most familiar with. That being said, I personally have not used this charting system software due to HIPPA rules and policies. I conducted many conversations with professionals about the system.

This is an independent project with no association of the company.

02 | Why this interface?

Healthcare and technology are closely intertwined. As technology improves, so does ways people can help people. Electronic charting records (ECR’s) is a way a hospital or clinical system to keep all records of a patients information receiving treatment.

But, your records do not always follow you. If you need to move across country for a new job, or move closer to family and the area uses a different medical charting system, you essentially have a clean record.

Epic Systems is a popular electronic charting records system. I chose to add a feature addressing system information gaps with minor redesigns because of the frustration physicians face when treating a patient when there already is a solution.

03 | Analysis of Problem

Here were the main pain points I wanted to address:

1. Patient reliability

2. Only charting in Epic shows in Epic
